The Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan and Audible.com want to make your dog more comfortable.
You can finally stop feeling bad about leaving your dog at home by itself just turn on an audiobook and hit the road.
Amazon’s subsidiary Audible and “The Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan are teaming up to create an audiobook series made specifically for your dog. Seriously. Soon you’ll be able to start a book, sneak out of the house, and let your doggo enjoy a relaxing day at home all by itself.
To any pet-free folks out there, this probably sounds absurd. But Millan claims that audiobooks make owners feel like they’re leaving their dog with a friend, not home alone. And it gives dogs a calm energy to distract them throughout the day, just as if you were there talking out loud yourself.
Dogs are social animals, so they need to engage with someone, and the purpose of Audible for Dogs is to make dogs feel there is someone with them,” Millan said in the Audible for Dogs announcement. “The person performing the audiobook is actually keeping your dog calm and taking the dog to a resting state, acting as an extension of you.
As unbelievable as it sounds, we think audiobooks for dogs might actually do pretty well.
Amazon began offering audiobooks for dogs. The first one is a mystery titled “Who’s A Good Boy?”

At the shelter I work at, we play Harry Potter audiobooks over the loudspeaker for the dogs & cats and I think that’s magical. @jk_rowling

This project came about after Millan used 100 dogs from his Dog Psychology Center for audiobook research. He found that 76% of dog owners who played audiobooks reported their dogs were more relaxed and calm than their non-audiobook listening counterparts.
Milan suggests that dog owners play audiobooks that are spoken in their own gender. So a young woman should play an audiobook read by another young woman when she leaves.
Every audiobook in the collection was chosen by Millan and includes a special introduction from him before the book starts. The featured audiobook right now is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. Other options include Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah, A Dogs Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron, and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.
New listeners can get a 30-day membership trial at Audible that comes with one free audiobook. Yes, this includes any of the special picks on Audible for Dogs. And anyone can download Millan’s personal work called “Cesar Millan’s Guide to Audiobooks for Dogs” for free right now.
If you want your dog to be left with a new friend everyday, try downloading some options from Audible for Dogs. Hopefully your beloved pal doesn’t end up liking his new audiobooks more than you.
